FUNDRAISING TIPS

Putting the ‘fun’ in fundraising

Fundraising for your event is meant to be fun!  Tour de Cure has lots of tips and tricks to help you achieve your goal.  Below are some pointers but if you need more help, simply contact fundraising@tourdecure.com.au

First things first

Breakdown your fundraising target so you have mini milestones to reach in the lead up to your event.  This makes the process more manageable and you can see how you are progressing towards your goal.  Aim to reach and even exceed your fundraising commitment well before your event.

Tell your story and include a photo of yourself

Your supporters want to know WHY raising funds for cancer research, support and prevention is important to you. What’s your connection to the cause? What difference are you hoping to make? What challenge are you undertaking? Your supporters are keen to know – don’t be afraid to share your WHY. Remember to add a photo, a picture tells a thousand words so find a great shot that your supporters can connect to.

Have a plan and discover what kind of fundraiser you are with these practical ideas

Fundraising can initially be a daunting prospect, however, when you work to your strengths and have a plan, it becomes achievable, fun and rewarding.

  • If you are new to fundraising, just ask and share your inspiring story through email or social media.

  • If you are social with a large network of friends or colleagues, consider holding a covid safe event such as a movie night, trivia night or wine tasting.

  • If you are fundraising as a team book a Bunnings BBQ or cake sale.

  • If events aren’t your thing, run an auction or cash raffle.

  • Foodies can invite friends to a dinner party, BBQ, sell homemade chutney or put on an afternoon tea.

  • Social Media addicts, just ask by sharing why being part of this event is important to you.

  • Declutter and sell unwanted ‘stuff’ on Facebook marketplace.

  • Self fund by giving up buying coffee for a month and donate the savings to your fundraising.

  • If it’s your birthday or coming up for Christmas, ask for a donation instead of a gift.

  • Sell a service and wash your neighbour’s car or walk their dog for a donation to your page.

  • Attend the fundraising workshop for more hints and tips - date TBC.

Thank your donors

Every time you receive a donation, make a point of thanking your supporter.  Let them know their donation has been noticed and appreciated. Use social media to publicly thank your donors by posting a picture of them with a thank you message – it’s a great way to remind other people to donate.

If you hit your target, or you are close to reaching it – increase it

Your fundraising goal can change whenever you feel like it.  If you’re getting close to hitting your target don’t be afraid to increase your goal.  It will encourage your supporters to give more.

Spread the word - share your fundraising page on all your social media channels

People who share their fundraising page raise significantly more than those who don’t.  Use ALL your social media channels to tell people what you’re doing and why it means so much to you. Don’t simply share your page once, keep doing it so as many of your followers as possible see your post.

Finally, ask again!

People often need reminding, if you asked them once and they haven’t donated – ask again, they may have just forgotten and won’t begrudge a friendly reminder. Don’t be afraid to ask even after you’ve completed your challenge - almost 20% of donations come in after the challenge is over!

Fundraising is fun and easy when…

  • You have a plan

  • Get started early

  • Maximise your strengths

  • Thank your donors

  • Remember ‘Why’ fundraising for cancer research, support and prevention is important to you
